So, Giles van Gheele is spelled this way and not ‘van GAYLE’ or ‘VANGALAND’ because that is how he is spelled in the records of the Dutch church in London. For foreigners, whose names are commonly wildly misspelled by English scribes, I have looked for spellings where possible that were written by the individuals themselves, failing that by others of the same nationality. In indexing, I have tried to use intuitive modern spellings of names and I have ignored prefixes such as ‘van’ or ‘de’ hence Giles van Gheele is indexed under G for Gheele. In many cases we have further information on the individuals and I welcome enquiries about individual makers of particular interest. I will update the record as information comes to light. We have tried to write the entries to be short and yet provide insights into the sources, for which the abbreviations are given at the end of the document.
